With over 30 years’ experience in financial services, Allen prides himself on being a “persuasive educator” – providing solutions for the financial concerns of his clients. From the first client who made the decision to save $25 per month from her paycheck to today’s business with clients in over 600 qualified organizations, Allen has continued to emphasize service and education.

As President of Knox Financial Group and CEO of Allen Knox Associates, Allen provides vision, advanced technical support, marketing strategy, training and management for AKA office and field associates. He also works with schools, hospitals, nursing homes, other non-profit organizations as well as businesses and individuals with asset and risk management solutions. Allen works from his office in West Union, Iowa and travels throughout Iowa and South Dakota to serve his clients.

Biography

Born and raised in rural Northeast Iowa, Allen is a graduate of the Valley Community High School. Allen’s parents, Marj and Leallen, and his grandparents were insurance agents, serving property and casualty clients in the Hawkeye and Wadena areas. Leallen was the long-time mayor of Wadena and also served as Fire Chief. Marj wrote a historical column for local newspapers, served as the town librarian and played organ at the Presbyterian Church for 40 years. It was from this background that Allen developed his interests in service and education.

Allen’s resume includes mowing lawns, running a gas station, running a farm milk route and driving a school bus as he pursued his education. Allen graduated from Valley Community High School. He received his BS degree in Math and History from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, IA. He was a junior high math teacher in the Valley Community School District for nine years and was a vacation route driver for Schwan’s and worked as a World Book representative. In 1975, Allen decided to join an agency in Marion, Iowa that specialized in Tax Sheltered Annuity Retirement Plans for school employees. Allen was a District Manager for the agency and a Field Manager for Kansas City Life. In the mid-1980’s, Allen became an independent agent, completed his securities registration and formed Allen Knox Associates.

Allen was a school board member for nine years. He is a founder of the Valley Community Coalition, a support group for youth who have concerns with the problem of substance abuse. The VCC has received state and national recognition for its’ outstanding success in working with youth.

Personal

Allen and his wife, Janice, live in Clermont, Iowa. They are blessed to share four children: Krista Knox [chemical specialist for Texas Hydraulics, living in Temple, TX]; Jason Knox [VP of Knox Financial Group, living in West Union, IA]; Cassie Friederich [Youth Prevention Specialist and Mentoring Coordinator for the Valley Community Coalition, living in Wadena, IA]; and Stephanie Friederich [accountant with KwikTrip, living in LaCrescent, MN]. Allen’s interests include spending time with Janice and their family, supporting community youth primarily through the VCC, staying in touch with school matters, traveling, walking [mostly a historical interest!], reading, writing and working with his lawn and garden. A special favorite activity is spending “Grandpaw” time with Newman.

Janice Knox

Janice has over 20 years’ experience with Allen Knox Associates, working as a client service representative, administrative assistant, office manager and accountant. She has worked in every office aspect of the business and has also spent time outside the office meeting with administrators, office staff and other employees in nonprofit organizations who have their retirement plans through AKA. Her experience and concern for the individual client have been a major factor in the growth and excellent reputation of the business.

As Chief Financial Officer of Allen Knox Associates and Secretary/Treasurer of Knox Financial Group, Janice is responsible for all of the financial operations of the two businesses. In addition to her general accounting functions, Janice tracks and pays commissions to associates and is in charge of tracking the payment of new and renewal business. She also handles all licensing and contracting for staff and associates and maintains records on continuing education. Janice continues to work on-site with administrators, employees and associates during group retirement plan reviews at nonprofit organizations. Recently, she has directed the complete reorganization of the AKA pending business system and also directed the total make-over and enhancement of the accounting system used with non-profit organizations to record contributions.

Biography  

Born in Northeast Iowa, Janice lived with her parents in Ohio and Illinois before returning to Iowa to complete her education.  A graduate of the Valley Community School District, she completed college at the Northeast Iowa Area Community College in Mason City.  Janice was employed as a bookkeeper at an implement company and owned and operated a liquor store.  When her youngest daughter entered Kindergarten, she began her work with Allen Knox Associates, working in an office that had been converted from a garage.

Janice has her state insurance license and has successfully completed several CEU and other business training courses.  She is a resource for the accounting departments of the nonprofit organizations in terms of setting up the payroll deductions and establishing the billing procedures in their own systems.  Janice is recognized as a resource in the area for others working with Quickbooks accounting software.

Personal

Janice and Allen live in Clermont. Janice’s interests include spending time with Allen and her family, shopping at Goodwill with her daughters and sister, purchasing clothing and toys for children of friends and associates, decorating her home, walking with her friend, volunteering for activities of the Valley Community Coalition, reading and travel. Janice enjoys going on Deer and Eagle drives with Allen and also taking Sunshine Tours on Sundays and days off. She especially loves dogs. Janice currently spends a great deal of time enjoying “Granmaw” activities with Newman, her “GranPuppy”. Janice is Treasurer of the West Clermont Lutheran Church and Newman spends Wednesdays helping Grandmaw with the church books.

As a Chief Marketing Officer, Jason travels throughout the Midwest working with group retirement plans, business retirement plans, individual clients, and the firm's other investment representatives.

Jason has more than 16 years of professional experience within the financial industry. He has served as a Compliance Officer, Branch Office Manager, and Associate Marketing Officer. These positions have provided experience in regulation, plan and product design, and advanced portfolio design & management. Jason is a Vice President with Knox Financial Group. Jason is generally referred to as 'the technical resource' in the office.

Jason currently holds Securities Series 6, 26, 63, and 65 registrations and is an Investment Advisor Representative. He studied Economics and Political Science at the University of Northern Iowa, earning his degrees in 1995. While attending college, he worked for an agricultural coop and also a general contractor. He continues his education by studying for professional designations.

Jason was born in Wadena, IA and currently resides in West Union, IA with Amber, Nate, Nick and Tucker (the puppy). He enjoys spending time with family and friends, home remodeling, landscaping, boating, ATVs, and attending auto racing events.

Misty Johnson

Misty has worked with Allen Knox Associates since 1996. Misty is Allen's administrative assistant, handles client communications, manages fixed new business, is in charge of customer service on fixed products, is the mailroom and filing supervisor, and assists with general office duties.   She is also the primary receptionist and is the manager of the control log system which keeps track of to-do items for staff and associates.  

Biography

Misty was born in Northeast Iowa and graduated from the Valley Community School District.   She completed her Administrative Assistant degree at NICC in Calmar.   In 1996 while finishing her degree, Misty joined Allen Knox Associates.   Misty assumed a full-time position in the summer of 1997.   In 2001 Misty took a three-year break to be with her family at home.   During this time she ran a daycare and later worked for a local optometrist.   In September 2004 she rejoined Allen Knox Associates and is very happy with her position.

Misty has her state insurance license and has successfully completed several CEU and other business training courses.   Misty assists with group retirement plan reviews in hospitals and nursing homes and has been on joint calls with individual clients.

Personal

Misty and her husband, Erik, live in Clermont with their three children, Ashton, Tanner, and Avery.  Misty grew up in Clermont and she moved back there with her family three years ago.  The move brought them back closer to family and also made it possible for Erik to rejoin the fire department in Elgin, which is where he grew up.  Erik works at Rupp Aire Manufacturing and has a lawn care service.  Misty enjoys time with her children and especially enjoys going on school trips and volunteering at her children’s school.  She also loves scrap-booking, spending time with family and friends, and walking with her family and Banjo, the family’s pet chocolate Lab.

Shane first became interested in personal finance while taking a business class in high school.   Upon understanding the potentials associated with compound interest, he decided a career in business, specifically personal finance might be of interest, and benefit, to him.   He attended AIB College of Business in Des Moines, graduating with an associate degree in business administration and financial services.   He then spent a year working as a loan processor at a mortgage corporation in Minneapolis.   He eventually returned to school to complete his bachelor's degree in financial management.

Upon graduating from college, getting married to the love of his life, Michelle, purchasing his first home, and starting a family, Shane came to the important realization that personal financial management was a must.   Faced with a mortgage and student loans, he developed a passion for debt reduction and saving for the future.   Once again, he realized that compound interest can be your best friend or your worst enemy.   His desire now is to help educate individuals and families how to control their money, rather than allowing their money, or lack thereof, to control them.

Having been born and raised in Northeast Iowa, Shane was naturally drawn back to the area upon completion of his education. He and his wife Michelle have a son, Malachi and a daughter, Adelyn. The family currently resides in Elgin where Shane also serves as the Associate Pastor for First Baptist Church. His interests include spending time with friends and family, playing and teaching guitar, singing, reading, and exercising.

Abbie Peterson

Abbie has worked with Allen Knox Associates since January 2009. Abbie is an administrative assistant in the office. Abbie works with data entry, updating client data, preparing presentation materials, and mailroom duties. Her work supports all areas of AKA’s operations.

Biography

Abbie was born in Postville, Iowa and graduated from Valley Community School District. Abbie has an AA degree from Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar in Business Administration and a B.A. degree from Upper Iowa University in Fayette in Business Administration. Abbie also works part-time for Helping Services of Decorah at their Valley Community Coalition office in Elgin, Iowa.

Abbie recently received her state insurance license.

Personal

Abbie recently moved to Elgin from the small village of Gunder, home to the Irish Shanti’s famous Gunderburger.  Abbie enjoys spending time with family and friends as well as reading, baking, and making people laugh.

Amber has worked with Allen Knox Associates since February of 2011. Amber is the records management specialist in the office. Amber works with the client's files, keeping them up to date and organized. Her work supports all areas of AKA's operations.

Biography

Amber was born in Waterloo, Iowa and graduated from Waterloo West High. Amber has a BA degree in Criminology from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Amber is currently working on her Master's in Public Administration with an emphasis in personnel management with Upper Iowa University in Fayette. Amber also works full-time as an Administrative Coordinator with Upper Iowa University in Fayette.

Personal

Amber lives in West Union with Jason, her two sons Nate and Nick, and their puppy Tucker. When Amber is not working or studying; she loves to spend time with her family and friends.

Newman Peterson

Newman is a native of the Fredericksburg, Iowa area and moved with his parents to Clermont, Iowa in 2007. Newman is a purebred Shih Tzu. He graduated from the West Union Obedience School in 2008 and was the class favorite in running to his master through the tall grass at the fairgrounds. His achievements in school also included learning to SIT, STAY and STOP [for Granmaw] and do an amazing TWIRL on his hind legs to get a treat of cheese.

Newman is a part-time staff associate of AKA and works mostly on Friday mornings. His expertise is in greeting anyone coming into the office and making certain that he is noticed. He also works with Granpaw on his computer and likes to hold down papers on the desk by laying on them. Newman does not miss anything that is going on in the office and will sit by Granmaw in his own chair.

In his free time, Newman likes to play with his parents and spends a great deal of time watching events in the neighborhood from his special place on the back of the couch in front of the picture window. He has become something of a neighborhood celebrity as people wave to him as they walk and bike past his home. Some walkers have said they go out of their way to wave to him.

Newman likes to be the Granpuppy with Allen and Janice and enjoys walking with them, lying on the back of their couch in front of a window, and taking rides in the Suburban. One of his special times is to go to McDonald’s with Allen and Janice and then visit a park with Granpaw while Granmaw shops at Goodwill. His favorite park is in Independence, Iowa as the trees are spaced just right.

Newman assists Granmaw with the Church books on Wednesdays and has become a favorite of the Pastor and Church Secretary who keeps special treats for him in her desk. Although Newman did attend one church service, he has not returned as he fell asleep during the sermon.

What Newman brings to AKA, Janice and Allen is a constant reminder that there is more to life than business, worries, troubles and fear. Life is to be enjoyed! Newman gives us Unconditional Love each time he comes to visit or we go to pick him up. Unlike Maris on Frasier who could not have a pet because “she can’t handle unconditional love” – we not only handle it but welcome and enjoy it.
